According to the Toronto Globe, the maple leaf was often prominently displayed during the summer and autumn of 1860, when the Prince of Wales toured British North America and the United States. He came to represent his mother, Queen Victoria, to open the Victoria Bridge in Montreal and to lay the cornerstone of the new parliament buildings in Ottawa.
